It's Max's passion and obsession to discover how we can safeguard ourselves against dementia, Alzheimer's and the growing number of neurodegenerative diseases that are prevalent today. This was a personal topic for me as well because my parents had suffered, are suffering the very things that we get deep down and discover today as well with Max. In this episode, we talk about his discoveries during the making of the movie, "Bread Head," and we also chat about his new book, "Genius Foods," that help us gain back our mental clarity amongst many other things. Good morning Stu. How are you?

Yeah, very well. Thank you. We're super excited again today to have you on the show because you're a true pioneer in your specified topic, which for me, is neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer's, optimizing the brain specifically as part of the pillars of health. It's a topic personally as well that is really close to home because we've got family issues as well in that area, which I'll talk to you a little bit later on the show. But first up, before we really get into the good stuff, I just wondered if you could tell our audience who might not have been exposed to your work, a little bit about yourself please.

Max

Absolutely. Again, my name is Max Lugavere. I'm 35 years old. I split my time between New York City and Los Angeles. My background is in media. I'm not a medical doctor. I was a health and science journalist for many years. That sort of began with a five-year tenure working for a TV network in the United States, that was founded by former US Vice President, Al Gore. I worked with him and his team for five years, cutting my teeth with the best of the best in Hollywood, learning how to tell a story, learning how to communicate fairly hot button topics with responsibility and grace. I left current TV to try to figure out where I was going to go with my career. I was in my mid-20s and it was around that time that my, back home in New York City, that my mother started to display strange symptoms of what would ultimately be determined to be a neurodegenerative disease. Basically, for me, I'm my mother's oldest son. My family's very tight-knit. I became, basically, obsessed with learning everything I could about what was robbing my Mom of her brain function such a young age. She was 58 when she first began showing symptoms. In tandem with that, with trying to do everything I could for my mother, my mission became bifurcated, essentially, because on the one hand, I was trying to learn why this happened to her, but on the other hand, it became very much about myself and how I can protect myself from ever having to experience cognitive decline and also to protect those that I care about, which is in a way, a sort of selfish thing. The people that I love, I want them to continue to be around me, in good health. I started learning about all of the mechanisms and associations that play when it comes to preserving and ultimately enhancing the way that our brains work. I just decided at a certain point that I couldn't stay quiet.

[00:02:30] Well, it depends on the context. What I usually say is, I'm a change agent, I am a change agent for health and wealth, because your greatest wealth is your health. Our healthcare system is broken. I really want to change all those things, I feel like that's my mission, that's the reason why I'm here. I does depend on context. I used to say I'm a bored certified gynecologist, I practice functional medicine. Half the people would turn on their heel and go the opposite direction, so it's evolved over time.

So we have a question we ask everyone when we kick off, and that is, "If a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

I don't know.

Don't speak to strangers.

[00:03:30] Yeah. Literally I'd say, "I don't know." I could equate doing yard work to that's part of my job or working out, that's part of my job, or screwing around with breathing or screwing around with a kettlebell or whatever, or walking my dogs. That's part of work, you know? It literally is, because I'm trying to understand things, connect dots, and make things happen in a way that ... you know I've been able to ... I do believe I'm fortunate, but I do believe that I've kept something that a lot of people just really ditch and think that they gotta get in, like "I gotta get a job," which I understand that. I've played that game, but I've remained curious enough to be able to develop things that have allowed me to do what it is I really want to do.

We covered many, many topics, of course, and it's been fantastic. Just in case, I love kicking off with this question for the show, and I've no doubt I'll get a great answer this morning as well, and for our listeners who might not be familiar with your work, and because you travel so much. When somebody asks you, a stranger, what you do for a living, what do you usually say, Joe?

Dr. Joe

[00:04:00] Well it's funny that you say that because I was on a flight just the other day, and I was 40 minutes to get from one side of the airport to the other, and I was walking very quickly and I passed the person that I knew was going to be on my flight, and I knew she was going to sit next to me. I don't know how I knew that, but anyway. She got on the plane, and she looked over and she pointed at the seat, and I got up and I helped her put her bags above me, and then she sat down next to me. And I said, "So, how long have you been an attorney?" And she looked at me and she said, "What? How did you know I was an attorney?" And I said, "I just know". She said, "I work so hard on not looking like an attorney". I said, "oh I knew you were an attorney", and I said, "oh let me guess, you work for the government". She said, "how did you know that?" I said, "I don't know, I just knew"

[00:05:00] And so we started talking and she said, so what do you do. And I said, I always start off with the conservative answer, "I'm an author". And then she said, well, what do you write about? And I said, well, I write about the neuroscience and the biology of personal change and transformation. And she said, "what!" And I said, "yeah, like how do we change, how do we create a better life for ourself, how do we live with more passion and more wholeness". And from that moment on, from the time we flew ... took off to the time we landed we never stopped talking. And I had so much to do but she had question, after question, after question. And it's a topic that, I think, most people are interested in, because I think we innately believe that what this new science is telling us, we innately believe that it is possible for us, to create a better lives, better life for ourselves and to change who we are. So, it was a great conversation.

This week we welcome to the show author, speaker, comedian and internet Youtube sensation Dominic D'Agostino. He is researcher and teacher with a rich degree of experience in the fields of neuroscience, molecular pharmacology, and physiology, Dominic D’Agostino, Ph.D., serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida (USF). Commanding an impressive professional and academic background, D’Agostino laid the foundations for his career while an undergraduate at Rutgers University, during which time he received his school’s Educational Advancement Scholarship.

He has completed various research projects related to developing and testing neuroprotective and metabolic therapies for a wide range of conditions, including Central Nervous System (CNS) oxygen toxicity, epilepsy, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, wound healing, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly called ALS). As a result, D’Agostino has earned a number of grants from government organizations, along with publication in such peer-reviewed journals as the Journal of Applied Physiology, Neuroscience, Journal of Neurophysiology, and the Journal of Microscopy. Named Assistant Professor at USF in 2008, Dominic D’Agostino currently pursues a broad array of research and teaching endeavors as a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology at the Morsani College of Medicine.

This week, our awesome guest is Dominic D’Agostino. What a legend this guy is. I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast again. I know I say that pretty much most episodes, but it’s true. We dove into the topic of ketosis today, ketogenic diet, and we hit him up with as many questions possible to get us clarity on probably now which is the most searched diet within Google, which is the ketogenic diet, interestingly enough.

There you go, he’s back. [inaudible 00:03:02] matters for those people in audio. Dom, we always ask the same question on the show every week when a new guest comes on, and that is if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

Dominic

Yeah, that happens sometimes. I tell them I’m a scientist. Usually I don’t go more in-depth than that.

Guy

I bet it’d be a can of worms. If they started prodding slightly, say “Yeah, what kind of scientist?” What would you say then?

Dominic

I study the brain, because my formal training is neuroscience, so … and that usually opens another can of worms, you know? They ask, “What part of the brain do you study,” or something like that.
