01:17 Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I am delighted to welcome Kimmy Smith to the podcast. Kimmy, how are you?

Kimmy

01:24 I'm very well, and super excited to be here today. Thank you.

Stu

01:28 Yeah. It's a topic I think that [00:01:30] is going to be of huge interest to so many people out there. So, before we delve into all the questions and get stuck into the juicy stuff, I'd love it if you could just tell our listeners a little bit about who you are and what you do.

Kimmy

01:43 Okay. Awesome. So, my name is Kimmy Smith, and I'm the founder of the Fit Mummy Project App and the Nourish Mummy Project App, and I'm a mom to three little girls. I guess I'm sort of in my, I feel like it's [00:02:00] my second life. My first life I played professional sport, so I played for the New South Wales Swifts, and I was member of the Australian netball squad. For a long time, that was who I was, so extremely fit and very competitive. At the same time, I was studying law and working as a corporate lawyer, so very type A.

This week we welcome Tessa Stowe to the show.  She is the Happiness Pathfinder.  She has found a path back to happiness for herself and shares it with others. Her expertise is on the subject of reclaiming happiness and being as happy as one can be has come from two main areas:

Real life:

–  It’s come from her corporate high-flying days where she had a huge education on what does NOT make one happy—even though I didn’t realize it at the time.

–  It’s come from her own journey back to happiness after her husband of 27 years died.

–  It’s come from her being her own guinea pig and testing happiness practices.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • What is true happiness?
  •  Why are so many of us unhappy?
  • What strategies can we learn to become happier?

https://180nutrition.com.au/shop/

This week I'm excited to welcome Tessa Stowe. Tessa is known as the Happiness Pathfinder who has made it part of her life's purpose to decode the science around happiness to create practices that everyone can follow that ultimately leads to a happier life.

00:59 In this [00:01:00] interview we discuss her journey that led her to this path and also the habits and behaviors that are subconsciously making us unhappy. What it ultimately boils down to is that life really sucks when we're not happy. I encourage you to sit down, relax, and enjoy this conversation. Over to Tessa.

01:20 Hey, guys. This is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I'm delighted to welcome Tessa Stowe to the podcast. Tessa, good morning. How are you?

Tessa

01:51 Who am I?

Stu

01:52 Yes.

Tessa

01:52 Gosh, that's a big question.

Stu

01:53 Who are you?

Tessa

01:56 Well, my name is Tessa Stowe and I'm all about [00:02:00] helping people fast-track their happiness, particularly after a significant event has sucked it out of them. I do that with happiness recipes and we'll talk about those as we go. Essentially they're very fast, fun, effective, and you can fit them into your day.

02:19 I actually got into this ... I'm not a counselor, I'm not a therapist, I'm not any of those things. It's more from my [00:02:30] life experience and I've also really studied and connected with a lot of the world's leading experts on happiness and behavior.

02:38 Right.

02:38 I got into this because basically I was tricked. I was tricked.

This week we welcome Dr. Michael Ruscio to the show. He is a doctor, clinical researcher and best-selling author whose practical ideas on healing chronic illness have made him an influential voice in functional and alternative medicine. His research has been published in peer reviewed medical journals and he speaks at integrative medical conferences across the globe.

Dr. Ruscio’s best-selling book, Healthy Gut, Healthy You, has paved the way for a ‘start with the gut’ philosophy which has enabled doctors and patient to obtain improved outcomes with minimal expense and effort.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • What are the most obvious signs of an imbalanced gut?
  • How effective are shop-bought probiotics?
  • What 3 things compromise our gut health the most?

https://180nutrition.com.au/

In this interview, we discuss his best-selling book, Healthy Gut, Healthy You, and talk about the common roadblocks that people face when attempting to improve their own gut health.

With gut health now regarded as pivotal for optimal health, this conversation is a must-listen. Over to Dr Ruscio.

01:19  Hey, guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I am delighted to welcome Dr Michael Ruscio to the show. Dr Ruscio, how are you?

Michael

01:26  Doing well. How are you?

Stu

01:28 Very well, thank you, very well. Thank you so much for your time, and before we jump into the questions today, I would love it if you could just explain to our audience a little bit about your work, who you are, what you do.

Michael

01:42  Sure. Sure. So, essentially, right now I have an alternate medicine practice in Northern California, where I primarily focus on gut health. The interesting thing, though, is that, because the gut connects to so many systems, it kinda congenitally ties me to things like thyroid and autoimmunity, in general, immune health, in addition to just the gut.

02:06  After I was in practice for a while, I started noticing that some of the dictums of progressive, alternative and functional medicine were maybe a bit off, maybe a bit well-intentioned, but probably a bit wasteful and in need of some scientific verification. And so that led to the aspect of getting involved in some of the clinical research that we're doing at my office, trying to answer questions of what really works in this progressive, alternative, integrative model. What, maybe, was good idea, but doesn't really pan out.

02:40  And so, in the clinic, also performing clinical research, and I recently authored a book all about gut health. I also have a website and a podcast and write some articles. So, kind of involved in this, I guess, from multiple aspects. But all about trying to help people improve their health with progressive yet conservative and well-evidenced, vetted information that can, again, get them healthy without subjecting them to unnecessary dietary restrictions, unnecessary supplement popping or testing, and try to really take the best from what's out there and leave the rest.

This week we welcome Andrew Steele to the show. Andrew is a former Olympian and professional athlete. As head of product and professional sport at DNAFit, he shows people how to use their genetic information to get the best results from their training.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • Why is understanding our DNA important?
  • How can understanding our DNA help us with our sleep quality?
  • I’ve heard a lot about the MTHFR gene, what is its role in the body?

https://180nutrition.com.au/shop/

This week I’m excited to welcome Andrew Steele. Andrew is a former Olympian and now head of product at DNAFit, an award-winning personalized health and well being company. They help people like you and me to better understand our DNA in order to get the most out of nutrition, fitness, and general well-being.

01:02 In this interview we discuss how we can benefit from this technology, the most common things that people change after testing, and also what the future holds for DNA testing itself. I’m really excited about this technology as it offers the advice that has the potential for us to make better choices all around, which is fantastic. Anyway, enough from me, over to Andrew.

01:27 Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I’m delighted to welcome Andrew Steele to the show. Andrew, how are you?

Andrew

01:34 I’m good, thanks. Thanks for having me.

Stu

01:35 No mate. Thank you for your time. Before we get into the questions, as well for our listeners that may not be familiar with you or your work, could you just tell us a little bit about yourself, and who you are, and what you do?

Andrew

01:50 Sure, I’m Andrew. I’m in my current role as the head of products at a company called DNAFit. We specialize in looking at the genetic factors behind fitness and exercise response. We allow people via a home DNA test to personalize their diet, personalize their exercise workout, based on not just their own choices and goals, but also by understanding more about they’re made from a genetic factor.

02:19 Then that plays very well into my previous career, if you will, which was I was an Olympic athlete. I ran the 400 meters and the 4×4 Inter-relay for Great Britain. I spent about 12 years competing professionally there and spent a lot of time traveling all over the world and training everywhere. Part of that experience is what led me to discover the role of light DNA and genetics in sport, basically, and that led me to part of this company.
