180 Nutrition -The Health Sessions.

This week we welcome Martin Silva to the show. He is a true health guru. With a focus on nutrition and the best foods that we can be eating to maintain optimum health.
Find out how Martin's life changed when he put health before aesthetics with a clean diet and a clean lifestyle.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • What’s the minimum effective dose for exercise if I wanted to see real change in body shape?
  • If I’m genetically lean, is it realistic to build and sustain muscle?
  • What mistakes do most people make in the gym?

https://180nutrition.com.au/

This week I'm excited to welcome Martin Silver. Martin is a transformation coach, award-winning fitness model, and a personal trainer with over a decade of experience in the fitness industry. He takes a different approach for his clients by addressing areas of the mind and body, not commonly discussed in the gym.

01:01 In this episode we discuss how he uses intermittent fasting and ketosis as key tools for body transformation. And we discuss the industry myths that may be holding us back from our goals.

01:11 Over to Martin.

01:16 Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Martin Silver to the podcast.

01:22 Martin, how are you mate?

Martin

01:23 I'm great mate, thanks. Thanks for having me on.

Stu

01:25 No, it is a pleasure. I'm really intrigued into getting into this conversation today as well, but first up for everybody out there that might not be familiar with you or what you do, I just wanted if you could share a little bit of your journey with us.

Martin

01:45 Absolutely, yeah. So to cut a long story short, I started lifting weights at a young age and I've always been competitive, and into sports and stuff from a young age. So I've always been, as I said, very competitive and very active as a child. I started lifting weights at the age of 14 and I've never looked back. And when it comes to me stepping foot into the fitness industry, I was actually, I qualified as a personal trainer by the age of 19, I'm now 31. And I still do personal training now, so I've been doing that for ... I'm not very good at Maths, but 12 years or something.

02:25 So about four or five years ago, I decided to compete for the first time as well. So I've climbed to the Pro level as a fitness model athlete. I've competed I think about eight times. I've taken my body to the extremes in that sense. And nowadays over the last, say three years, I have managed to ... After, as you can imagine, been driven by aesthetics. That's probably the main reason why young lads in their teens start lifting weights anyway. It's probably insecurities or whatever. So obviously always being driven by aesthetics, I then managed to switch my mindset, which was the game changer for me into making health a priority, that was about maybe three years ago. And ever since then, I have managed to maintain my physique and I'm focused on my health and feeling good above anything. And that has now taken me to another level in terms of my message and actually helping people.

  • It seems every 2nd person has a food intolerance these days, why do you think that is
  • Is there a gold standard for testing?
  • How long does it typically take to overcome food intolerances.

https://180nutrition.com.au/

This week, I'm excited to welcome JJ Virgin. JJ is a celebrity nutrition and fitness expert, four-times New York Times best-selling author who has helped hundreds of thousands of people transform their lives. In this interview, we discuss the link from food [00:01:00] intolerances to weight gain and how we can start to reverse the issues that surround this. JJ is an absolute pioneer in her field and the tips, tricks, and strategies that she shares are applicable to everyone. Over to JJ. Hey, guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome JJ Virgin to the podcast today. JJ, how are you?

01:24 I am good. I always feel like I just got smarter when there's a British accent involved.

Stu: 01:30 [00:01:30] I don't know what to say about that. I wish I was as smart as I sounded, but we'll see how we go. First up, for all of those who may not be familiar with you or your work, I'd love it if you could just tell us a little bit about who you are and perhaps what you do and why you do it.

JJ

01:48 I am a nutrition and fitness expert, and I'm obsessed with weight loss, and I feel vindicated, actually, these last couple weeks because I have been literally [00:02:00] into health since the age of 12, and in my 20s, when I started out as a personal trainer, I was one of the first three in the country in the United States: me, and Body by Jake, and Mark Sisson. It was so obvious so quickly that what we were being taught in graduate school, which is calories in, calories out, was a complete ruse. I was like, "All right, I'm gonna figure this out," and I went in and I did 40 graduate and doctoral courses.

02:25 I started going through everything I could find, and what I came to the conclusion [00:02:30] of is that all calories weren't created equal, that our body's not a bank account, it's a chemistry lab, and you have to think of the hormonal effects of food. It was like I said, "Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, and the Easter bunny are all frauds," so it was like I was attacking peoples religions. I was like, "Oh, my gosh," and what I'm super excited about now is I've been, for the last couple decades, looking at everything that could get in the way of you using weight or cause you to gain weight which is how food intolerance and all that came [00:03:00] to be. Just a couple weeks ago, Dr. David Ludwig posted his research findings that, lo and behold, all calories are not created equal.

Stu

03:09 Wow, okay.

Tessa

01:28 Good morning, Stu. Stu? [00:01:30] Stuart? Both?

Stu

01:52 Yes.

Tessa

01:52 Gosh, that's a big question.

Stu

01:53 Who are you?

Tessa

01:56 Well, my name is Tessa Stowe and I'm all about [00:02:00] helping people fast-track their happiness, particularly after a significant event has sucked it out of them. I do that with happiness recipes and we'll talk about those as we go. Essentially they're very fast, fun, effective, and you can fit them into your day.

02:19 I actually got into this ... I'm not a counselor, I'm not a therapist, I'm not any of those things. It's more from my [00:02:30] life experience and I've also really studied and connected with a lot of the world's leading experts on happiness and behavior.

This week we welcome Dr. Michael Ruscio to the show. He is a doctor, clinical researcher and best-selling author whose practical ideas on healing chronic illness have made him an influential voice in functional and alternative medicine. His research has been published in peer reviewed medical journals and he speaks at integrative medical conferences across the globe.

Dr. Ruscio’s best-selling book, Healthy Gut, Healthy You, has paved the way for a ‘start with the gut’ philosophy which has enabled doctors and patient to obtain improved outcomes with minimal expense and effort.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • What are the most obvious signs of an imbalanced gut?
  • How effective are shop-bought probiotics?
  • What 3 things compromise our gut health the most?

https://180nutrition.com.au/

In this interview, we discuss his best-selling book, Healthy Gut, Healthy You, and talk about the common roadblocks that people face when attempting to improve their own gut health.

With gut health now regarded as pivotal for optimal health, this conversation is a must-listen. Over to Dr Ruscio.

01:19  Hey, guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I am delighted to welcome Dr Michael Ruscio to the show. Dr Ruscio, how are you?

Michael

01:26  Doing well. How are you?

Stu

01:28 Very well, thank you, very well. Thank you so much for your time, and before we jump into the questions today, I would love it if you could just explain to our audience a little bit about your work, who you are, what you do.

Michael

01:42  Sure. Sure. So, essentially, right now I have an alternate medicine practice in Northern California, where I primarily focus on gut health. The interesting thing, though, is that, because the gut connects to so many systems, it kinda congenitally ties me to things like thyroid and autoimmunity, in general, immune health, in addition to just the gut.

02:06  After I was in practice for a while, I started noticing that some of the dictums of progressive, alternative and functional medicine were maybe a bit off, maybe a bit well-intentioned, but probably a bit wasteful and in need of some scientific verification. And so that led to the aspect of getting involved in some of the clinical research that we're doing at my office, trying to answer questions of what really works in this progressive, alternative, integrative model. What, maybe, was good idea, but doesn't really pan out.

02:40  And so, in the clinic, also performing clinical research, and I recently authored a book all about gut health. I also have a website and a podcast and write some articles. So, kind of involved in this, I guess, from multiple aspects. But all about trying to help people improve their health with progressive yet conservative and well-evidenced, vetted information that can, again, get them healthy without subjecting them to unnecessary dietary restrictions, unnecessary supplement popping or testing, and try to really take the best from what's out there and leave the rest.

We allow people via a home DNA test to personalize their diet, personalize their exercise workout, based on not just their own choices and goals, but also by understanding more about they’re made from a genetic factor.

02:19 Then that plays very well into my previous career, if you will, which was I was an Olympic athlete. I ran the 400 meters and the 4×4 Inter-relay for Great Britain. I spent about 12 years competing professionally there and spent a lot of time traveling all over the world and training everywhere.
