180 Nutrition -The Health Sessions.

This week we welcome to the show Brian MacKenzie. He is a human performance and movement specialist. He is the innovator of the endurance, strength and conditioning paradigm. He has studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics & methods, along with heat and cold exposure. He has spent a lot of his time training and understanding in and around the water, and desert. He has participated in Ironman (Canada 2004), and has run the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance runs. He co-authored the books Power Speed Endurance, and The New York Times Best Seller UnBreakable Runner.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  •  When it comes to training, I’ve heard you say quality vs quantity and methods are many, principles are few, please explain?
  • What areas of exercise modalities would you encourage the weekend warrior who wants a rounded approach to their health, movement and longevity?
  • You free dived with Great White Sharks. Why?
  • Where does your passion for breathwork come from?
  • You're currently collaborating with Stanford University's Neuroscience Dept. on how breath can influence our 'state', what have you discovered?
  • I was intrigued by your book Unplugged, what can the reader expect from this?

And this week, our fantastic guest is Brian Mackenzie, who is a human performance and movement specialist. Not only that, he's a top bloke and a lot of fun and just got a stack of wisdom and experience behind him, so it was great to have him on the show today. He's studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics, methods along with heat and cold exposure as well. And we also dive into his more recent project, The Art of Breath, which of course I'm pretty passionate about as well. We even get into his book, Unplugged, and why he recently free-dived without a cage with great white sharks as well, which just blew my mind. So it's all in there. I don't care what you do. There's nuggets of wisdom for everyone in this podcast, and I have no doubt you're going to enjoy.

And I also want to mention, don't forget guys, we are offering all the podcast listeners a 15% discount on any of our 180 Nutrition products at the moment. All you have to do is go back to the shopping cart and enter the discount code 180 podcast and you can receive a 15% discount.

[00:01:30] Yeah, what I will mention as well is check out our new organic hemp blend protein as well, guys. It is phenomenal. We literally just launched it this week, and the laws have been changing around hemp. We've been excited to bring this protein to the marketplace as well, cause it's an all plant-based protein, and personally, I'm in love with it at the moment. Anyway, you can check that out as well, and the discount code applies for that too.

Anyway, let's go over to Brian McKenzie. Enjoy!

[00:02:00] Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cook, as always. Good morning, Stu.

Stu

Hello mate!

Guy

And our awesome guest today is Brian Mackenzie. Brian, welcome to the show, dude.

Brian

Thanks for having me, boys. Pleasure.

Guy

It's been a long time coming. Your name has popped up on different views and podcasts over the last 12 months at least. So it's like oh, we gotta get Brian on the show. So yeah, very appreciative of your time, mate.

Brian

Yeah, absolutely.

Guy

So we have a question we ask everyone when we kick off, and that is, "If a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

Brian

I don't know.

Stu

Don't speak to strangers.

Brian

[00:03:30] Yeah. Literally I'd say, "I don't know." I could equate doing yard work to that's part of my job or working out, that's part of my job, or screwing around with breathing or screwing around with a kettlebell or whatever, or walking my dogs. That's part of work, you know? It literally is, because I'm trying to understand things, connect dots, and make things happen in a way that ... you know I've been able to ... I do believe I'm fortunate, but I do believe that I've kept something that a lot of people just really ditch and think that they gotta get in, like "I gotta get a job," which I understand that. I've played that game, but I've remained curious enough to be able to develop things that have allowed me to do what it is I really want to do.

  • How does meditation changes our biology in real-time?

This podcast, I think we've saved the best for last for 2018, because I thought it was absolutely awesome, and Joe was on fire today, and we go down so many rabbit holes and it was great perspective as well, because Stu hasn't done Joe's work, and obviously I'm quite involved, so we get both sides of the coin, and I just thought it made for a fantastic interview. We covered many, many topics, of course, and it's been fantastic. If you're unfamiliar with Joe's work, I just have to say sit back, enjoy, keep an open mind, and I think you're going to really love what he has to say and how this interview goes and it's probably an episode you're going to want to listen to a couple of times as well, as we dive into it.
[00:01:30]

[00:02:00] And yeah, I thought it was fantastic anyway, so I've no doubt you're going to enjoy. And I just want to mention, as well, guys, that if you are kind of loving these topics and this work around Joe ... Joe Dispenza's work, [Greg Braden's 00:01:40] work, [Bruce Lipton's 00:01:41] work, all the people that we've had on in that sort on neuroscience, mindset philosophy on the podcast, I've created a Facebook page when I'm delving into that work a little bit more. So if you want to come and join us, the Facebook groups, I should say, is called, "Let It In with Guy Lawrence". Let It In with Guy Laurence, and come back there and we can more of these discussions and stuff like that around that. Or just go back to guylawrence.com.au and you can join the group from there. You'll just have to opt into my five step morning routine, which is actually worth getting anyway. So go back to guylawrence.com.au or Let It In with Guy Lawrence on Facebook, search for that and come join us, I'd love to see you in there.

[00:02:30] Anyway, lets go over to Joe Dispenza, I loved every minute of this podcast and I've no doubt I'll listen to it a couple of times myself, because there's nuggets of wisdom in it. Let's go over to Joe.

Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined by Stuart Cooke as always, good morning Stuart.

Hello mate.

Guy

And we welcome back to the show today our awesome guest, Dr. Joe Dispenza. Joe welcome back to the show.

Dr. Joe

Good to be with you, mate.

Stu

Ha ha, there he is.

Guy

We've actually had a few Ozzie impressions come on over the years, mate, I reckon that was the best one we've had.

Hello mate.

Dr. Joe

Good to be with you, mate.

Stu

Ha ha, there he is.

Guy

We've actually had a few Ozzie impressions come on over the years, mate, I reckon that was the best one we've had.

Dr. Joe

Oh God.

Guy

Just in case, I love kicking off with this question for the show, and I've no doubt I'll get a great answer this morning as well, and for our listeners who might not be familiar with your work, and because you travel so much. When somebody asks you, a stranger, what you do for a living, what do you usually say, Joe?

Dr. Joe

[00:04:00] Well it's funny that you say that because I was on a flight just the other day, and I was 40 minutes to get from one side of the airport to the other, and I was walking very quickly and I passed the person that I knew was going to be on my flight, and I knew she was going to sit next to me. I don't know how I knew that, but anyway. She got on the plane, and she looked over and she pointed at the seat, and I got up and I helped her put her bags above me, and then she sat down next to me. And I said, "So, how long have you been an attorney?" And she looked at me and she said, "What? How did you know I was an attorney?" And I said, "I just know". She said, "I work so hard on not looking like an attorney". I said, "oh I knew you were an attorney", and I said, "oh let me guess, you work for the government". She said, "how did you know that?" I said, "I don't know, I just knew"

[00:05:00] And so we started talking and she said, so what do you do. And I said, I always start off with the conservative answer, "I'm an author". And then she said, well, what do you write about? And I said, well, I write about the neuroscience and the biology of personal change and transformation. And she said, "what!" And I said, "yeah, like how do we change, how do we create a better life for ourself, how do we live with more passion and more wholeness". And from that moment on, from the time we flew ... took off to the time we landed we never stopped talking. And I had so much to do but she had question, after question, after question. And it's a topic that, I think, most people are interested in, because I think we innately believe that what this new science is telling us, we innately believe that it is possible for us, to create a better lives, better life for ourselves and to change who we are. So, it was a great conversation.

Commanding an impressive professional and academic background, D’Agostino laid the foundations for his career while an undergraduate at Rutgers University, during which time he received his school’s Educational Advancement Scholarship.

He has completed various research projects related to developing and testing neuroprotective and metabolic therapies for a wide range of conditions, including Central Nervous System (CNS) oxygen toxicity, epilepsy, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, wound healing, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly called ALS). As a result, D’Agostino has earned a number of grants from government organizations, along with publication in such peer-reviewed journals as the Journal of Applied Physiology, Neuroscience, Journal of Neurophysiology, and the Journal of Microscopy. Named Assistant Professor at USF in 2008, Dominic D’Agostino currently pursues a broad array of research and teaching endeavors as a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology at the Morsani College of Medicine.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • Can you explain what ketosis is and why it matters?
  • Who benefits from ketosis the most?
  • You’re a big guy, how do you maintain your size and muscle mass while in ketosis?
  • Can you tell us a little about exogenous ketones?
  • What does your daily diet look like these days?

Shop here: http://shop.180nutrition.com.au/

This week, our awesome guest is Dominic D’Agostino. What a legend this guy is. I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast again. I know I say that pretty much most episodes, but it’s true. We dove into the topic of ketosis today, ketogenic diet, and we hit him up with as many questions possible to get us clarity on probably now which is the most searched diet within Google, which is the ketogenic diet, interestingly enough.

If you’re unfamiliar with Dominic’s work, he is an assistant professor at the College of Medicine, Molecular Pharmacology, and Physiology at the University of South Florida. He works to develop and test nutritional and metabolic therapies, including ketogenic diets and ketogenic agents for seizures, epilepsy, metabolic disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, muscle wasting, and cancer, to name a few. He also recently just worked on a project with NASA as well. It’s safe to say this guy is extremely well researched, knows his stuff, but more importantly is a top guy too.

If ever you’ve been wondering about the ketogenic diet, does it apply to you, we cover from all angles — from the elite athletes to the other end of the spectrum, for people whose health might be in crisis, and to us folk in the middle as well. We cover it all and hopefully it will reveal a lot more that you didn’t know about the ketogenic diet today, so I have no doubt you are going to enjoy.

Don’t forget as well guys, we are currently running a 15% discount code back at our headquarters, 180nutrition.com [inaudible 00:01:52] off all our natural products for our podcast listeners. All you need to do is go back to the shop and use the discount code “180podcast” during checkout. We’ve got things to help you support your gut, from our glutamine to our organic greens [inaudible 00:02:08] and of course our smoothie former as well. They’re all there to serve a purpose. If you haven’t tried it yet, now is the chance to give it a shot with the discount codes. That’s 180podcast during checkout.

That’s all I’m going to say today. I trust you if you’re going to leave a review on iTunes, you’re going to do so anyway, if you’re enjoying this podcast. Let’s move on to Dominic D’Agostino, this one’s awesome. Enjoy.

Hey, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stuart Cook as always. Good morning, Stuart.

Stu

Good morning, mate.

Guy

Our fantastic guest today is Dominic D’Agostino. Dom, welcome to the show.

Dominic

Thank you for having me.

Guy

Appreciate it, mate.

Dominic

Great to be here.

Guy

It’s a great pleasure. I’ll just say as well, Stu, your camera’s just dropped off, mate. You’ve disappeared, but as long as we can hear you.

Stu

Yeah, how about that?

Guy

There you go, he’s back. [inaudible 00:03:02] matters for those people in audio. Dom, we always ask the same question on the show every week when a new guest comes on, and that is if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

Dominic

Yeah, that happens sometimes. I tell them I’m a scientist. Usually I don’t go more in-depth than that.

Guy

I bet it’d be a can of worms. If they started prodding slightly, say “Yeah, what kind of scientist?” What would you say then?

Dominic

I study the brain, because my formal training is neuroscience, so … and that usually opens another can of worms, you know? They ask, “What part of the brain do you study,” or something like that.

This week we welcome to the show author, speaker, comedian and internet Youtube sensation Dr. Michael Breus. He is a Clinical Psychologist and both a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a Fellow of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He was one of the youngest people to have passed the Board at age 31 and, with a specialty in Sleep Disorders, is one of only 163 psychologists in the world with his credentials and distinction. Dr. Breus is on the clinical advisory board of The Dr. Oz Show and appears regularly on the show (>30 times in 4 years).

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • Why is sleep so important and what happens if we don’t achieve quality sleep?
  • How can we hack our jet lag?
  • What supplements can we use to help us sleep?
  • How can we improve our home environment for sleep?
  • We were intrigued by your book - The Power Of When. Can you explain a little about the book.

Shop here: http://shop.180nutrition.com.au/

And this week, our awesome guest is Dr Michael Breus, also known as, “The Sleep Doctor.” Now, I have to say, I loved this episode. His enthusiasm and knowledge for this topic was amazing. Now, we’ve covered sleep a few times on the podcast before, but again, there was so many nuggets of wisdom to come out of this and the way I thought about sleep and my own personal sleep and how we apply it. And obviously, we know how passionate Stu is about sleep as well. And it was just great and I have no doubt you’re gonna love it.
[00:01:00]

[00:01:30] He covered things from jet lag to circadian rhythms to what we can do and hacks and tips and all sorts of stuff. And it was awesome. And if you aren’t familiar with his work, Dr Michael Breus is a clinical psychologist, and both a diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, and a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He has a specialty in sleep disorders and is only 1 of 163 psychologists in the world with these credentials and distinctions. He also appears as a clinical advisory board of the Dr Oz show, and appears on the show on a regular basis. So yes, he knows what he’s talking about.

[00:02:00] The other thing that I wanted to mention is that thanks for the iTunes reviews, guys. I really appreciate it. iTunes have made it easier than ever now to leave a review on the podcast, and if you are listening to our show on a regular basis, we’d really appreciate a review just to continue to help get this message out there, and more people like yourselves can listen to the show. Stu

Good morning, Guy.

Guy

And our awesome guest today is Dr Michael Breus. Michael, welcome to the show.

Dr. Breus

Thanks for having me, Guy and Stuart. I really appreciate it. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.

Guy

Yeah, it’s gonna be fantastic. Stu’s a kid in a candy shop as always with this topic. So we’ll see what happens. But the question I always ask everyone on the show when they come on, Michael, is if a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

Dr. Breus

I would tell them that I teach people how to be better in bed.

Question we ask in this episode:

Why use comedy to get your message out there and have you always used this approach?

Did you expect this kind of response / popularity online and has it affected your life in anyway?

You have a new book ‘How To Be Ultra Spiritual’. How do we achieve this?

- What’s your advice for those not in a great place (depressed, stressed or unhappy).

Hey, this is Guy Lawrence from 180 Nutrition, and of course welcome to another fantastic episode of The Health Sessions, where we are connecting with leading global health and wellness experts to share the best and the latest science thinking empowering us all to turn our health and lives around. I want to apologize up front first because it’s been a few weeks since our last podcast episode, but Stu had to go back to the UK, so we took a podcast sabbatical for the last few weeks, but we are back with a vengeance because our awesome guest this week is JP Sears. I loved every minute of this episode. [00:01:00] He is the man behind the viral comedy videos, and if you haven’t seen any of them you’ve probably been either, A, not on social media, or B, living under a cave, but becoming Ultra Spiritual, and he does an amazing job of getting a great message out there, helping light up the world, but doing it with so much satire and comedy at the same time. It’s just fantastic and if you haven’t seen any of his videos, boy, definitely check them out after this podcast today. According to Wikipedia, JP Sears is a life coach, an internet comedian. He is known for his satirical parodying of veganism, gluten free ads, New Age beliefs, and other modern happy topics with his video series Ultra Spiritual. Did I tell you I’m a bit dyslexic? I can’t even get my words out sometimes. [00:01:30] Like I said, this podcast goes off in all sorts of directions and it was great to see the other side of JP today as well, as we get into some profound topics, may I say it. The other thing I wanted to mention as well, we are offering, if you haven’t tried any of our 180 products back on our website, we are offering a 15% discount for all our listeners. That’s right, you can get our famous smoothie super food mix, our greens, the l-glutamine to help sugar cravings and improve the gut health as well. If you go back on there, we even got the new bars up there now, which we’re super excited about, and of course, all these products fit in with our values and beliefs, and thousands of people are using them every single day. [00:02:00] The 15% discount code if you want to take advantage of it at the moment, you simply enter at checkout “180 podcast.” That’s 180 podcast in the discount field during the checkout, and you can enjoy 15% off at the moment. Anything else I need to add? That’s probably it at the moment. Enjoy this podcast with JP Sears. Beautiful.

Hey, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined by Stuart Cooke, as always. Good morning Stu.

Stu

Good morning Guy. [00:02:30]

Guy

Our awesome guest today is JP Sears. JP, welcome to the show mate.

JP

Guy and Stu. Thank you for having me on brothers. Happy to be here with you.

Guy

It’s an honor dude, it’s an honor. Now, mate, we ask one question to every guest on the show, and [crosstalk 00:02:44]-

JP

Man. Short show. I like that.

Stu

Very short.

Guy

Straight off the bat.

Stu

Short and sharp.

Guy

That is if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? [00:03:00]

JP

[00:03:30] Honestly, as that’s been happening, my answer that I’m giving in real life is I don’t know. There’s so many facets of what I do. I think the heart and soul of what I do is I use connection and creativity to help people hopefully live more meaningful lives. My rambling on answer is I make videos, I do a lot of speaking and performing, got a book. I work with different companies, help them promote their products with brand deals. All that equals is I’m confused. Do a bunch of stuff which is all fun for me at least.

And this week our wonderful guest is Dr. Allison Siebecker. Now Allison has worked in the nutritional field since 1988, and is a 2005 graduate of the National University of Natural Medicine, where she got earned her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine, and her Masters in Oriental Medicine. Boy, is Allison a wealth of information. I, again, biasedly, love this episode. This topic is actually a bit close to my heart, and after listening to what Allison had to say, today, I'll be going to get a SIBO Test. If you have no idea what SIBO is, don't worry about it. I still think it's a really relevant topic for us all, to at least be aware of, and especially if you're having symptoms of bloating, in the gut, all the time. Symptoms of IBS, and things like anxiety, as well, and depression, can even stem from SIBO, which is just fascinating. It is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. [00:01:30] Anyway, we cover all areas today. We wanted to make this episode relevant for the listener, as well as maybe, the practitioner, that wants to learn more about SIBO, as well. I'm going to get a test and if you do fancy getting a test done, yourself, on SIBO, just drop us an email through 180, and we can help direct you in the right direction, if you choose to do so. And you probably will. [00:02:00] Anyway, the other thing I wanted to mention, as well: You might've heard me talking about giving away free samples of our 180 Superfood. Where you can just have a smoothie in the morning, get a complete natural protein, wholefood hit. Replaces poor meal choices, it's a really quick and convenient way of doing so, which we love. With the free samples, plus shipping, I'm trying something different today, so what I didn't realize, after podcasting for 4 and a half years, is that, if you're actually listening to this podcast right now, on your phone, you can actually go to where it's playing. Just below the play button, on the podcast app, there's a 'Show Notes' button. If you click that, you can, within 3 seconds, click the link that directs you to free samples, and, like I said, all you have to do is pay a small shipping and handling fee. If you want to try them, and you haven't yet, I suggest you do so. That is the easiest way to do it. Well there you go, eh. You learn something new every day. [00:02:30] Anyway, lets go over to Allison. I love this episode. Enjoy. Hi, this Guy, I'm joined with Stu, as always. Good morning, Stewart.

Stu

Ow' yah goin'? How are you?

Guy

And our lovely guest, today, is Dr. Allison Siebecker. Allison, welcome to the show.

Dr. Allison

Thank you.

Guy

Well, what a topic. This is a topic, we've not covered in depth before. I tell you what, I am pumped for this episode, today. I truly am.

Dr. Allison

(laughs)

Guy

[00:03:00] Now, we ask a question to every guest that comes on the show. That is, "If a complete stranger stopped you on the street, and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?"

Dr. Allison

I'd probably say, "I'm a doctor." But you know, that's a very simple answer, but these days I do a lot more teaching. So maybe I should say I'm a teacher. Or maybe I should say, "I'm a doctor that teaches." (laughing)

This week welcome to the show Dr. Dale Bredesen. Dr. Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. He graduated from Caltech, then earned his MD from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He served as Chief Resident in Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) before joining Nobel laureate Stanley Prusiner’s laboratory at UCSF as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow. He held faculty positions at UCSF, UCLA and the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Bredesen directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute in 1998 as its founding President and CEO.

The uniform failure of recent drug trials in Alzheimer’s disease has highlighted the critical need for a more accurate understanding of the fundamental nature of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Bredesen’s research has led to new insight that explains the erosion of memory seen in Alzheimer’s disease, and has opened the door to a new therapeutic approach. He has found evidence that Alzheimer’s disease stems from an imbalance in nerve cell signaling: in the normal brain, specific signals foster nerve connections and memory making, while balancing signals support memory breaking, allowing irrelevant information to be forgotten. But in Alzheimer’s disease, the balance of these opposing signals is disturbed, nerve connections are suppressed, and memories are lost. This model is contrary to popular dogma that Alzheimer’s is a disease of toxicity, caused by the accumulation of sticky plaques in the brain. Bredesen believes the amyloid beta peptide, the source of the plaques, has a normal function in the brain — promoting signals that allow some of the nerve connections to lapse. Thus the increase in the peptide that occurs in Alzheimer’s disease shifts the memory-making vs. memory-breaking balance in favor of memory loss. This work has led to the identification of several new therapeutic candidates that are currently in pre-clinical trials.

Dr. Bredesen’s novel insights into the fundamental nature of Alzheimer’s disease recently attracted an investment of $3.5 million toward a $10 million goal for initial clinical trials of these new therapeutics. This generous support came from the private venture capitalist Douglas Rosenberg, who is helping to fund the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Network, centered at the Buck Institute. The unit is screening drug candidates to find those that can preserve a healthy balance in the signaling pathways that support memory. Dr. Bredesen’s work on nerve cell signaling is also the focus of a collaboration between the Buck Institute and BioMarin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which is seeking treatments for a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease, early onset Familial Alzheimer’s Disease (eFAD), which may develop in people as young as 30 years of age.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • In your opinion, what causes the onset of neurodegenerative diseases?
  • Are they as common as we are led to believe, and should we be worried?
  • How do we test for NDD?
  • Is alzheimer's preventable/reversible, if so what steps should we take?
  • How important is the role of nutrition and/or functional medicine in the prevention of NDD?

We have Dr. Dale Bredesen on the show. I’ve got to just say, it never ceases to amaze me some of the information that comes out on these podcasts. I just feel like the luckiest guy alive sometimes. There’s one that myself and Stuart love today. Dale was just a champion. We get into neurodegenerative diseases today, as that’s Dale’s area of expertise. He is a internationally recognized expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. [00:01:00] He’s also come out with a new book, which is a New York best seller, The End of Alzheimer’s. It was an instant New York Times success. Now the book, as well, is covering this groundbreaking plan to prevent and reverse Alzheimer’s disease. That fundamentally changes how we understand cognitive decline. But there are so many valuable lessons within this podcast for all of us, whether we know anyone with a neurodegen- … I can’t even get the words out, neurodegenerative disease, or not. [00:01:30] Yeah, just get into it. Enjoy it. There’s quite a lot of technicality in here as well, but it’s definitely worth a couple of listens. If you know anyone that is suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, then please share this podcast with them, because I think there’s definitely hope. This podcast will inspire them. It was just, yeah, phenomenal, and I’m keen to try and get this message far and wide. [00:02:00] The last thing I want to say before we go over to Dale is that if you are enjoying the shows, guys, I would love you to leave a review, five star it, and subscribe it, just to continue to help us get this word out there. I think we’re three reviews short of 100 reviews for here in Australia or anywhere. That’s fantastic. If you could be one of those three to get us over the line, that would be brilliant. Anyway, let’s go over to Dr. Dale Bredesen. This podcast is awesome. Enjoy! [00:02:30] Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stuart Cooke, as always. Good morning Stuart.

Stu

Hello.

Guy

Our awesome guest today is Dr. Dale Bredesen. Dale, welcome to the show.

Dr. Dale

Thanks very much for having me.

Guy

Look, it’s fantastic, mate. We always kickoff and ask the same question to all our guests when they come on the show. That is, if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

Dr.Dale

I do everything possible to see if we can improve people who have neurodegenerative illness. [00:03:00]

Guy

Beautiful, perfect. I couldn’t say it any better. The other thing we always ask as well, Dale, is, would you mind just filling us a little bit in of your journey, your background, and what led you to be so passionate about this work, and making waves in the industry?

Dr. Dale

[00:03:30] Yeah. I came from a different place than most people who are doing this sort of medicine today. I came from a very classical science background. I was interested in mathematics and chemistry when I was a kid. I went to Caltech, and spent time at MIT as well for those reasons, working in chemistry. And then decided that if we were going to do something … I got very, very interested in the brain. When I was a freshman in college, I read a very interesting book called The Machinery of the Brain. I got very excited about that and kind of got hooked for life on neuroscience. [00:04:00] But I realized that if I was going to make any inroads into the illnesses that affect the brain, I really needed to go to medical school. So I went to medical school and got a lot of criticism for being a scientist wanting to go to medical school. But I went into neurology, and as you know, neurology has a long history of being tremendous diagnosticians. And, of course, Sherlock Holmes was actually based on a real neurologist. But in general, neurologists have been known to be the group that does not do much about the treatment side, very good with diagnosis, not so great, not so successful with treatment. And the diseases, no question, they’ve been very, very difficult.

This week welcome to the show Dr. David Hamilton. David has a first class honors degree in chemistry, specializing in biological and medicinal chemistry. He has the slightly geeky honour of having achieved 100% in his 3rd year university degree exam in ‘Statistical Mechanics’, which is a branch of quantum physics applied to chemistry.

After completing his PhD, he worked for 4 years in the pharmaceutical industry, first developing drugs for cardiovascular disease and cancer, then a year managing leadership and change projects. During this time he also served as an athletics coach and manager of Sale Harriers Manchester, one of the UK’s largest athletics clubs, leading the Junior Men’s team to three successive UK finals. Upon leaving the pharmaceutical industry, he co-founded the international relief charity Spirit Aid Foundation and served as a director for 2 years.

While writing his first book (2004-2005), he taught chemistry (main) plus ecology and mathematics (secondary) at West College Scotland (formerly, James Watt College of Further and Higher Education) and tutored chemistry at the University of Glasgow.

He’s now a bestselling author of 8 books (No’s 9 and 10 are due out in 2017) published by Hay House UK, and offer talks and workshops that use science to inspire – fusing neuroscience, the mind-body connection, kindness, and philosophical and eastern spiritual teachings. He also writes a regular blog on his website as well as occasional blogs for the Huffington Post (US edition) and Psychologies Life Labs, and is a columnist for Soul and Spirit Magazine. In 2016, David won the Kindred Spirit, ‘Best MBS Writer Award’.

He has been featured in numerous publications, including ELLE, RED Magazine, Psychologies, YOU Magazine, Good Housekeeping (both UK & US), and several newspapers.

You might wonder how he got into writing on the subjects he does. In his own words, “Well, during my time in the pharmaceutical industry, I was fascinated by the placebo effect – how people improve through believing they are receiving a drug – so I began to study mind-body interactions in my spare time. I decided to leave the pharmaceutical industry after 4 years because I wanted to educate about the mind-body connection, help people to believe in themselves more, and spread a little more kindness in the world in my own way.”

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • You specialized in biological and medicinal chemistry. Why did you decide to look at the placebo effect?
  • How powerful do you think the placebo really is?
  • What inspired you to write your new book, The 5 Side Effects of Kindness?
  • What are the 5 side effects of kindness?
  • Can you tell this listeners what "molecules of kindness are?"

We have on the show Dr David Hamilton, and I have to say I truly loved every minute of this show. Now David has a first class honors degree in chemistry, specializing in biological and medicinal chemistry. After completing his PhD he worked for four years in the pharmaceutical industry, first developing drugs for cardiovascular disease and cancer, then a year managing leadership and change projects. Now he is also a best selling author of 8 books published by Hay House in the UK, and offers talks and workshops that use science to inspire, fusing neuroscience, the mind body connection, kindness and a philosophical and eastern spiritual teaching, so yes you can see why I loved this episode so much.

[00:01:30] [00:02:00] And what I loved about David's journey, A) he is just an upbeat positive awesome dude, but from that as well we get stuck into the placebo at first and what he was seeing from back in his pharmaceutical days, and comparing that to the actual drugs people were taking, which is just fascinating, and then we get into his new book, the Side Effects of Kindness, and he talks at it from a biological and physical perspective as well of what is going on, and it was just fascinating, and yeah it was awesome, so if you want to do an act of kindness after listening to this show, feel free to leave us a review on iTunes, or actually share this episode with someone that you think might really appreciate it. Because there is a lot in here and I have no doubt you will enjoy it as well. Now you might have heard me mention on a couple of podcasts in the past, I've personally myself set up a closed Facebook group and the group is designed, if you kind of enjoy this information and this content, me personally I have a lot of interest in meditation, neuroscience and the changes that are going on within myself and my life, and it has had a huge positive impact on me over the last 3 or 4 years as I have been exploring a lot of it. [00:02:30] Anyway I have created this Facebook group called Guy Lawrence Let It In, and if this kind of stuff inspires you, you enjoy it and you want to hang out with like minded people, come on over and, yeah I will welcome you into the group and come and introduce yourself and let me know you found it on the podcast. Anyway, so I just want to mention that. It is Guy Lawrence Let It In, just do a Facebook search. Anyway lets go over to Dr David Hamilton, this episode is awesome. Hi this is Guy Lawrence, I am joined with Stuart Cook as always, good afternoon Stu.

Stu

Hello mate.

Guy

And our awesome guest today all the way from the UK, is Dr David Hamilton. David, welcome to the show.

David

Oh well, thanks very much, nice to be here. [00:03:00]

Guy

It is a pleasure mate, and we ask one little question just to kick start the show to all our guests, and that is if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

David

I write books and I give talks. In a nutshell. I would probably tell them the kind of topic that I wrote on but it depends on how ... if we were moving fast in opposite directions. [00:03:30]
