180 Nutrition -The Health Sessions.

Stu: This week we welcome Thomas DeLauer. He is an American celebrity trainer, entrepreneur and an author, known for his writings on inflammation inside of the human body. His fitness journey started when he was 12, while studying art history in Italy. After seeing fitness models on magazine covers, Thomas became interested in creating a muscular physique of his own. He quickly developed a passion for exercising.

During his early 20s, Thomas took some time away from the gym to focus on his career as an entrepreneur. During that time, he developed some unhealthy habits and became overweight. He realized he needed to get back into the gym, so he spent several months training hard to get back into shape.

After several months of hard work, Thomas got his old physique back and decided to start a new business that would compliment his love for fitness, so Thomas became a personal trainer. Ever since he made the switch to fitness, he went on to grow his name successfully, and help clients around the world transform their lifestyles.

Questions asked in the episode

Are carbs the enemy or can we use them to our advantage for optimizing health?
Do you think keto is the ‘magic pill’ for weight loss?
- What are your thoughts on ‘looking fit’ vs ‘being healthy’?
- What do you do to ensure that you get the best night’s sleep?

 Stu

Okay, back to the show. This week I am excited to welcome Thomas DeLauer. Now Thomas is an expert in the world of chronic inflammation. He’s a pioneer in personal transformation. He’s got a great story himself. He’s a host of a very successful and hugely educational YouTube channel as well. So in this episode, this week we discuss the many faces of inflammation. How it’s probably sabotaging your health goals. We discuss looking fit versus being healthy and whether the ketogenic diet is right for you.

So Thomas is a great guy, hugely knowledgeable, and I’m really excited to be able to share this info with you today. Anyway, enough rambling for me. Let’s get back to the show.
[00:01:30] Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Thomas Delauer to the show today. Good morning Thomas. How are you?

Thomas

What is going on? Thanks for having me.

Stu

Good stuff. So look, first up Thomas, for everybody out there, specifically over here as well, that may not be familiar with what you do, I’d love for you to just tell us a little bit about yourself. Why you do what you do as well.

Thomas

Yeah. I’ll give you kind of the 30 second elevator pitch here.

Stu

Great.

Thomas

[00:02:30] So a lot of people that do know me, know me probably from YouTube and Facebook. Just from the plethora of videos I put out there but my main claim to fame was my transformation. I was 280 pounds and working kind of in a corporate healthcare environment. Very unhappy person. Very unhealthy person. I was focused on money and focused on business and focused on career. So I had a big transformation in my life. Now I’m 180 pounds. Been on covers of multiple magazines, T.V., everything like that, so in all harnessing the power of the Ketogenic diet, fasting, and really understanding inflammation. And working closely with a lot of physicians over my career, cause I was in the health care industry. I owned an ancillary lab services company.

So that was really my claim to fame. Harnessing the power of all these doctors that I worked around and utilizing it to really transform my life. Then I realized that I had a gift for articulating more complex scientific subjects and articulating health and physiology and really breaking it down for people. That’s what I do now. I create lots of videos for a living and fortunately help lots of people, or so I think I do.

Stu

[00:00:30] Hey, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and welcome to another episode of The Health Sessions. It's here that we connect with the world's best experts in health, wellness and human performance in an attempt to cut through the confusion around what it takes to achieve a long lasting health. Before we get into the show today, you might not know that we make products too. That's right. We're into whole food nutrition, have a range of super foods and natural supplements to help support your day. If you're curious, you want to find out more, jump over to 180nutrition.com.au and take a look. Okay. Back to the show.

[00:01:00] This week I am super excited to welcome Brad Davidson. Now Brad is an author, a performance coach, speaker and presenter and is an expert on the topic of metabolism. Brad wrote his bestselling book "Stark Naked 21-Day Metabolic Reset," which has been the topic of conversation around our office for a while. Now he's a super nice guy. We had a lot of fun in this episode and discussed among many things how so many of us get it wrong when thinking about diet and exercise and how doing less and eating more carbs could lead to better health. Now I guarantee you'll get something out of this interview. I had a blast. Without further ado, let's get into the show.

Hey, guys. This is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I am delighted to welcome Brad Davidson to the show. Good morning, Brad. How are you?

Brad

Hey. I'm doing great. Thank you. So excited to be on this.

Stu

[00:02:00] We've just been inundated with emails and requests from our audience over here in Australia, they're talking about "The Stark Naked 21-Day Metabolic Reset" book that seems to be causing a little bit of a stir over here as well. I dug deep and just had a little look what's it's all about, who's this about and realized that you really got a really good story to tell. From your story, you've radically changed the way you do things and now you're helping a whole heap of people. I would love, Brad, if you could perhaps just tell us a little bit about yourself, who you are, what you do and perhaps why you do it just to kick start.

Brad

[00:02:30] Yeah. Awesome. First off, I'm a husband, father of three, got my hands full. I'm a speaker now. I travel around the United States, Canada, get international a little bit here and there. Focused on the metabolism. I'm a big fan of energy. That's my thing. I learned early on at 33 that if you lack energy, you lack life. It was interesting because my life, fitness and obsession with extreme fitness and extreme nutrition, I mean just wiped me up. Talk about a curve ball in life. I was obsessed on that. I love to work with people that are burned out, tired, have roadblocks in life. Just kind of lost that zest for life.

[00:03:00] I love to just restart that. I'm a big fan of helping people live a more fulfilled life is the big goal now.

He is also the director of the upcoming film Bread Head, the first-ever documentary about dementia prevention through diet and lifestyle and author of the soon-to-be released, Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain For Life (Harper Wave, March 2018). Lugavere has contributed to Medscape, Vice, Fast Company, and the Daily Beast and has been featured on NBC Nightly News, the Dr. Oz Show, and in The Wall Street Journal. He is a sought-after speaker, invited to lecture at esteemed academic institutions such as the New York Academy of Sciences and Weill Cornell Medicine, has given keynotes at such events as the Biohacker Summit in Stockholm, Sweden. From 2005-2011, Lugavere was a journalist for Al Gore’s Current TV. He lives in New York City and Los Angeles.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • Can Alzheimer’s be prevented, or even reversed?
  • What ‘everyday foods’ contribute to cognitive decline?
  • Are ancient or pseudo grains a healthier option?
  • How can we best exercise for brain health?

https://shop.180nutrition.com.au/

. This week, I am super excited to welcome, Max Lugavere to the show. Max is a filmmaker, TV personality, health and science journalist and brain food expert. It's that brain food that really got me excited to be able to talk to Max today. It's Max's passion and obsession to discover how we can safeguard ourselves against dementia, Alzheimer's and the growing number of neurodegenerative diseases that are prevalent today. This was a personal topic for me as well because my parents had suffered, are suffering the very things that we get deep down and discover today as well with Max. In this episode, we talk about his discoveries during the making of the movie, "Bread Head," and we also chat about his new book, "Genius Foods," that help us gain back our mental clarity amongst many other things. So, without further ado, let's get into the show. Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted this morning to welcome Max Lugavere to the show. Good morning Max.

Max

Good morning Stu. How are you?

Stu

Yeah, very well. Thank you. We're super excited again today to have you on the show because you're a true pioneer in your specified topic, which for me, is neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer's, optimizing the brain specifically as part of the pillars of health. It's a topic personally as well that is really close to home because we've got family issues as well in that area, which I'll talk to you a little bit later on the show. But first up, before we really get into the good stuff, I just wondered if you could tell our audience who might not have been exposed to your work, a little bit about yourself please.

Max

Absolutely. Again, my name is Max Lugavere. I'm 35 years old. I split my time between New York City and Los Angeles. My background is in media. I'm not a medical doctor. I was a health and science journalist for many years. That sort of began with a five-year tenure working for a TV network in the United States, that was founded by former US Vice President, Al Gore. I worked with him and his team for five years, cutting my teeth with the best of the best in Hollywood, learning how to tell a story, learning how to communicate fairly hot button topics with responsibility and grace. I left current TV to try to figure out where I was going to go with my career. I was in my mid-20s and it was around that time that my, back home in New York City, that my mother started to display strange symptoms of what would ultimately be determined to be a neurodegenerative disease. Basically, for me, I'm my mother's oldest son. My family's very tight-knit. I became, basically, obsessed with learning everything I could about what was robbing my Mom of her brain function such a young age. She was 58 when she first began showing symptoms. In tandem with that, with trying to do everything I could for my mother, my mission became bifurcated, essentially, because on the one hand, I was trying to learn why this happened to her, but on the other hand, it became very much about myself and how I can protect myself from ever having to experience cognitive decline and also to protect those that I care about, which is in a way, a sort of selfish thing. The people that I love, I want them to continue to be around me, in good health. I started learning about all of the mechanisms and associations that play when it comes to preserving and ultimately enhancing the way that our brains work. I just decided at a certain point that I couldn't stay quiet.

This week we welcome to the show Dan Buettner.  He is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world – dubbed Blue Zones – where people live the longest, healthiest lives. His articles about these places in The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic are two of the most popular for both publications.

Buettner now works in partnership with municipal governments, large employers, and health insurance companies to implement Blue Zones Projects in communities, workplaces, and universities. Blue Zones Projects are well-being initiatives that apply lessons from the Blue Zones to entire communities by focusing on changes to the local environment, public policy, and social networks. The program has dramatically improved the health of more than 5 million Americans to date. His books, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way, The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World’s Healthiest People, and The Blue Zones of Happiness were all national bestsellers. Buettner has appeared on The Today Show, Oprah, NBC Nightly News, and Good Morning America, and has keynoted speeches at TEDMED, Bill Clinton’s Health Matters Initiative, and Google Zeitgeist. His speech in January 2018 at the World Economic Forum in Davos was chosen as “one of the best of Davos.” Buettner also holds three Guinness World Records in distance cycling.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  •  Your last two books, The Blue Zones and The Blue Zones Solution, are about longevity and learning to live like the world’s centenarians. How, if at all, did that work inspire you to focus on happiness for your new book?
  • There are many books already out there about happiness. What’s different about THE BLUE ZONES OF HAPPINESS?
  • With all your discoveries, what has the most significant impact on a person’s overall happiness?
  • The book includes a Blue Zones Happiness Test. How did you design this test?

his week, we are doing it with the fantastic Dan Buettner. Now, if you’re not familiar with Dan’s work, he’s a multiple New York Times bestselling author, and he was very famously known for the book The Blue Zones. If you’ve been listening to our podcast, you know we’ve covered the topic a little bit from time to time on the air, which absolutely fascinates me. Essentially Blue Zones are dubbed where people live the longest and are the healthiest. His New York Times Sunday magazine article about these places, “The Island Where People Forgot to Die” was one of the Times’s most popular, and his National Geographic cover story, “The Secrets of Living Longer,” was a finalist for National Magazine Award. I think the Blue Zones has even reached cult status where there’s five of them in the world. And we’ll certainly get into that today. But we’re here today to talk about Dan’s new book, The Blue Zones of Happiness, and what really drives happiness and the lessons he’s learned from that. No doubt, you’re gonna enjoy the show today, so let’s go over to Dan Buettner. Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stuart Cooke as always. Good morning, Stuart.

Stu

Hello, mate.

Guy

And our awesome guest today is Dan Buettner. Dan, welcome to the show.

Dan

It’s a delight to be here.

Guy

Mate, I’m itching for this. This topic has come up so many times on our podcast over the last few years. Yeah, I can’t wait to get stuck into it. Now, Dan, we ask a question on every show for a guest, and that is, if a stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

Dan

I explore traditional cultures, and I distill their wisdom for other people to use. How’s that?

Guy

That’s perfect.

Stu

That would get me talking for sure, so I like it.

Dan

I’ve had the good fortune to work for National Geographic for the last 15 years, and I’ve developed a bit of a specialty of finding extraordinary populations and then distilling down their wisdom, and we’re very rigorous about measuring these populations and then also using vetted methodologies to distill down, what can we learn from them? So that’s the general …

This week we welcome to the show Sara Gottfried MD.  She is a Harvard-trained MD, bestselling author, and leading expert on hormones. She is a board-certified gynecologist who practices functional medicine, but also a regular gal—a busy working mom, constant chauffeur for my daughters, devoted wife, and spiritual seeker.

In her practice, she helps women balance their hormones naturally—starting with their fork. She has a “food first” philosophy and passionately believe that food is the small hinge that swings the biggest doors when it comes to your health.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • What is Healthspan?
  • What are the levers that most impact Healthspan?
  • How much of our health is determined by genetics versus the environment?
  • What can we expect from your book Younger?
  • If we could focus on just one thing to improve Healthspan, what would you recommend?

This week we have a very special guest for you. I just loved this podcast, and it was with Doctor Sara Gottfried. Now, if you're not familiar with Sara, she's a Harvard trained MD with over 20 years of experience. She's also the author of The New York Times best selling books, The Hormone Cure, The Hormone Reset Diet and her latest book, Younger.

[00:01:00] I kid you not, we had a blast on this podcast. We covered all sorts of topics from her own personal experiences to her thoughts on middle-age and how we can slow that aging process, but even from a disease-free perspective. On top of that what's clear about Sara is that she's a very honest, loving person, and leads by example in everything that she does. She's putting out such a great message to the world. It was just a privilege to have her on the podcast today and share this. We even get to talk about the Costa Rican term for Avila and Tequila. It's safe to say Stu was on fine form today as well as we kick off in 2018.

Anyway, I know you're going to enjoy this podcast. Let's go over to Sara Gottfried. Enjoy.

[00:01:30] Hi this is Guy Lawrence, I'm joined with Stuart Cook as always, good morning Stu.

Stu

Hello, mate.

Guy

Good to see you. A wonderful guest today is Sara Gottfried. Sara, welcome to the show.

Sara

Thank you, so happy to be here.

Guy

It's beautiful Sara. Like Stu was just saying, we've been following you from afar for so long, so it's nice to finally get round to having you on the podcast and exposing you to our listeners.

Sara

Same here.

Guy

Sara, we ask a certain question on every show and that is, literally, if you were say on an airplane or in the street and you sat next to a stranger, and they asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?

Sara

I would say I'm a troublemaker.

Stu

Yeah, that's what we like to hear.

Sara

[00:02:30] Well, it depends on the context. What I usually say is, I'm a change agent, I am a change agent for health and wealth, because your greatest wealth is your health. Our healthcare system is broken. I really want to change all those things, I feel like that's my mission, that's the reason why I'm here. I does depend on context. I used to say I'm a bored certified gynecologist, I practice functional medicine. Half the people would turn on their heel and go the opposite direction, so it's evolved over time.

It's true privilege to interview the guests we have on the show, and with a new year upon us, I think it's healthy to reflect upon the year that was. I enjoy taking a trip down memory lane. My hope is that you do to.

So here's to 2018!
