This week we welcome Dr Joel Fuhrman to the show. Dr Joel Fuhrman  is an American celebrity doctor who advocates what he calls a micronutrient-rich diet.

A former competitive figure skater, he suffered a serious injury which removed him from competition. He says an alternative medicine therapy helped speed his recovery and led him to become a physician. His practice is based on his nutrition-based approach to obesity and chronic disease, also referred to as a nutritarian or restrictive diet, as well as promoting his products and books. He has written several books promoting his dietary approaches and sells a related line of nutrition related products. As of April 2013, his book Eat to Live was on the New York Times bestseller paperback Advice & Misc. list for 90 weeks.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • What is the Nutritarian Diet?
  • Is gut health as important as we’re led to believe?
  • What are the top 3 foods to consume with longevity in mind?

00:44 This week, I'm excited to welcome Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Dr. Fuhrman is board certified family physician, a New York Times bestselling author and internationally recognized expert on nutrition and naturally healing. He advocates a micro-nutrient rich diet and explains how eating this way unleashes the body's tremendous ability to heal, achieve optimal weight, and slow the aging process. In this episode, we discuss the health issues linked to a modern-day processed diet and how eating G-BOMBs, more on this later, can help get us back on track. Even if you think you've got your diet covered, I guarantee you'll learn something from this conversation. So, enough from me. Over to Dr. Fuhrman.

01:29 Hey guys. This is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Dr. Joel Fuhrman to the show. Dr. Fuhrman, how are you?

Joel

01:37 Great to be here.

Stu

01:39 Thank you.

Joel

01:40 Fantastic.

Stu

01:40 Thank you. First up, for all of those listeners out there that may not be familiar with you or your work, I'd love it if you could just spend a couple of minutes just telling us a little bit about what you do and perhaps why you do it as well.

Joel

01:54 Well, I've been a board certified [inaudible 00:01:56] family physician specializing in nutrition for about 30 years now. I specifically went to medical school with the intent to do what I do, which is to reverse disease to aggressive nutritional methods. So, people with chronic migraines, fibromyalgia, asthma, advanced heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, auto-immune conditions like scleroderma, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, I'm making the radical claim that nutritional excellence is more powerful than medication. You could get people back to great health again without poisoning them with toxic drugs. I developed a career around that.

02:39 Aligned with that idea I've been treating sick people and getting them well again through nutrition, not through medications, is this concept of developing the ideal diet style to maximally extend the human lifespan. I've had thousands of people who have lost more than a hundred pounds, but the point I'm making right now is that it's not just about losing weight, it's about slowing the aging process, maintaining our youthful vigor, and our athletic abilities and our mental abilities into our later years and living to 100 years old in great health. I think that these modern advances in nutritional science are making this possible today for those of us that want that.

03:16 I'm president of the Nutritional Research Foundation. In other words, we raise money to do nutritional research studies and I've published numerous research projects and am involved with studies ongoing now, to show that we can protect ... we can prevent cancer and if people have cancer they can live longer. We're doing disease reversal and disease prevention studies as well, utilizing this nutritarian portfolio of these high-nutrient foods we have put together to design this ideal diet to maximize human longevity.

  • What are the tell-tale signs of gluten sensitivity?
  • If we eliminate grains, do we need to look to other foods to avoid deficiencies?
  • What everyday foods/practices do you believe can compromise the health of our gut?

https://shop.180nutrition.com.au/

This week, I’m excited to welcome Dr. Peter Osborne. Dr. Osborne is one of the world’s leading authorities on gluten sensitivity. Amongst many other exploits, he’s the founder of the Gluten Free Society, the author of the Gluten Free Health Solution, and the Glutenology Health Matrix, and the best selling book, No Grain, No Pain. In this episode, we discuss the biggest contributing factors that compromise our immune system and the best areas to tackle to start the healing process. Having the opportunity to connect with world experts is a real honor for me and I always come away feeling empowered, and this episode was no exception as Dr. Osborne is a true wealth of knowledge. So I really hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Okay. Let’s get into the show.

01:34 Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Dr. Peter Osborne to the show. Dr Osborne. How are you?

Peter

01:42 I’m doing fantastic. Thanks for asking. How about yourself?

Stu

01:45 Yeah, really, really good at. It’s 8:00 on a Friday morning, so I should be a little bit dusty, but I’m feeling okay. I’ve had a good breakfast and I’m ready to go. First off for our audience that might not be familiar with your work, I would love it if you could just tell our listeners a little bit about what you do and perhaps why you do it as well.

Peter

02:07 Yeah, so I started out about 18 years ago clinical practice. I left the VA Hospital here in Houston, Texas after a very disgruntled stint in the rheumatology department, and I was very disgruntled with the way that people were being treated. They were being treated with high levels of immune suppressants and steroid medications and surgical joint procedure replacements. And to me it was not a solution, it wasn’t an answer, nobody got better. It just seemed like a system. And I’m a veteran myself. So having these veterans come through the hospital and not being treated properly, it really didn’t sit well with me. So when I started my own private practice, one of the things that I made it a point of was to implement diet, lifestyle and nutrition into people with chronic autoimmune problems, because that’s where I was.

02:57 At VA Hospital, rheumatology, it’s rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Scleroderma, dermatomyositis. Diseases like psoriatic arthritis and spondyloarthritis. So joint pains, muscle pains, chronic autoimmune in nature. And there just wasn’t a real viable medical option outside of immune suppression, which to me was not a solution.

This week we welcome Ariel Garten to the show. Ariel Garten is the CEO and co-founder of InteraXon, which creates thought controlled computing products and applications. Ariel has also researched at the Krembil Neuroscience Institute studying hippocampal neurogenesis, displayed work at the Art Gallery of Ontario, been head designer at a fashion label, and opened Toronto Fashion Week. Referred to as the “Brain Guru”, Ariel and her team’s work has been featured in hundreds of articles in over 20 countries.

Questions we ask in this episode:

  • Please explain the process of meditating with Muse?
  • What diet/supplements are useful in enhancing our brains capability?
  • How important do you think a positive mindset is for overall health?

This week I'm excited to welcome Ariel Garten. Ariel is an artist, scientist, entrepreneur and CEO of InteraXon, a company specialized in thought controlled computing. In this episode we discuss Muse, the brain sensing headband. Muse is a wearable device that sits on your head and tracks your brain activity in real time, which brings the practice of meditation into a whole new light. We chat about how meditation can impact our overall health, and discuss the tools, tips, supplements and strategies that can help us get the most from our meditation sessions. 01:18 I like so many of us personally struggle with meditation, but it looks like Muse could be a real game changer in this space. Enough from me. Over to Ariel. Hey, guys. This is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I am delighted to welcome Ariel Garten to the show. Good morning, Ariel, how are you? Although I say good morning, so it's probably not good morning for you, is it?

Ariel

01:44 I'm in Canada. It is nighttime here, so good evening, good night to everybody in this side of the hemisphere, and good morning to you

Stu

01:52 Thank you very much. First up, for everybody that may not be familiar with you and your work, I'd love it if you could just tell our listeners a little bit about who you are, what you do and perhaps why you do it as well.

Ariel

02:03 Sure. My name is Ariel and I'm the founder of a company called Muse. We make a device that is a brain sensing headband that helps you meditate, gives you real-time feedback on your meditation so that you can know when you're in the zone and when your mind is wandering. Yes.

Stu

02:21 I was just literally going to jump in there with the meditation aspect as well.

Ariel

02:29 Jump. 02:30 Jump straight in. I was just telling you before that I really struggle with meditation, and after running a podcast for almost five years the take home for me from a lot of the world experts are that meditation is so critically, or it is so critical for overall health in terms of switching off all of the noise.

Stu

02:52 I liken my own personal journey with meditation as to perhaps standing outside a shop and sells televisions, and in the window of the shop there are 100 different screens. Each screen is showing something quite different. That's how my mind is. I'm thinking about this while looking at that, and there's something else happening up here. I've through Headspace, a billion different meditation apps, tried transcendental, tried many different practices and I really struggle with it. 03:21 Very, very interested in Muse and you sharing what Muse is in terms of a tech perspective with our audience, because I'm thinking that it might open up a whole different way of approaching meditation.

Ariel

03:34 What you described is essentially why we built Muse. Everybody knows meditation is fantastic for you, but frankly it's very hard to do. You can sit there even if you're guided by an app and your mind is still wandering all over the place. For some people that can be really scary. You're sitting there. Your mind is supposed to be blank, you imagine, even though that's not what meditation is, and it's bouncing all over the place. You say, "Oh, jeez. I'm not good at this. This is not for me." You end up feeling worse about yourself and not meditating. 04:02 We wanted to build a tool that literally would hold your hand while you meditate and let you hear in real time what was going on inside your mind and guide you and show you what it is that you're supposed to be doing, and reinforce you when you do it right. Stu: 04:16 Sounds like a very useful piece of kit. How does the process work? 04:23 You slip on this little device. This is your Muse. It slips on just like a pair of glasses like this, and it tracks your meditation in real time. There are sensors, two sensors on the forehead and two behind the ears. These are actually clinical-grade EEG sensors. They're actually tracking your brain's brainwave activity in real time. It then sends that data to your smart phone or tablet, which interprets the data and lets you hear the sound of your own brain. 04:52 The metaphor we use is your mind is like the weather. When you're thinking, distracted, it's bouncing all over the place, you hear it is stormy. As you bring yourself to quiet, focused attention it actually quiets the storm. Most people think that meditation is just the idea of letting your mind go blank. It's not. Meditation is actually mental training, and the most basic form of meditation is focused attention meditation. In that you are focusing your attention on your breath or on a neutral object. 05:20 How you do it is you focus your attention on your breath. Your mind wanders. You notice it wanders and then you bring it back to your breath. In doing so you're able to train and maintain your attention. Now, what happens for most of us is our mind wanders, it continues to wander, and then we catch, and, "Oh, right. We're supposed to bring it back." 05:39 This act of noticing it's wandered and bringing it back is like doing your bench press rep at the gym. That's the rep of meditation, noticing it, bringing it back. In a regular meditation you might be wandering one, three, five minutes before you notice and bring it back. With Muse, it cues you instantly. You instantly bring it back, so you can literally get in many times more reps at the gym. You really are honed in that practice of noticing and returning.

00:02:00 Sure. What do I do? Well, our new book will come out in about six weeks. It’s called You Can Fix Your Brain: One Hour a Week To the Best Memory, Productivity, and Sleep You’ve Ever Had. It’s already ranked number one on Amazon under strokes and neurological disease, so that is great that the word’s already getting out there.

00:02:28 This is my second book. The first book came out a couple of years ago called The Autoimmune Fix.

Stu

00:02:33 Okay.

00:44 This week I'm excited to welcome Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo. Dr. Ritamarie has a chiropractor, nutritionist, and nutritional endocrinology specialists. She educates those who want to understand and attack the root cause of their health issues to resolve, rather than take pills or trendy diets to mask the problem. In this episode, we discuss the issues of stress from feeling tired and wired to the tools, tips, and strategies to eliminate brain fog and boost energy. Dr. Ritamarie also shares a 2-minute breathing tip that can really change your day. Anyway enough from me, let's get into the show.

01:25 Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo to the show today. Good morning Dr. Ritamarie, how are you?

Ritamarie

01:25 Good afternoon.

Stu

01:35 Good afternoon. I've said that every single time in different parts of the world. Loving the backdrop as well. I have to say for everybody that's listening or watching us on video version, yeah, it's definitely where we want to be today. First up, for everybody out there that may not be familiar with your work, I would love it if you could just tell us a little bit about yourself, what you do and perhaps why you do it.

Ritamarie

02:04 Yeah, absolutely. I am passionate about helping people to regain their energy, their vitality, and to be the best of themselves so that they can live the life they were intended. I so often see people struggling and suffering and saddling basically for not really living the life that they want to because they're exhausted, their brain fogged, they'd just feel out of balance and out of sorts. I also am so passionate about changing the way the system works because I think a lot of it is because we're brainwashed from the time we're little that you have an ache or pain, you go to the doctor, you get a pill, and it takes care of it. As you age, you get frail and slow down and all that kind of stuff, and we expect that so we get it.

02:51 I think that our system needs to change. I also train health practitioners in the art of using nutrition to affect endocrinology and, use holistic and functional medicine techniques, and to do that in a big part is empowering people. It's what I call self-empowered healthcare. Why am I so passionate about that is I lost my own health when I was in my 20s when time of your life when you think you're at your peak. I was able to regain it, not through Western medicine, but through the kind of work that I now do, which is in nutrition and functional medicine.

03:24 I also lost three very close to actually more than three, but three extremely close family members; my mother, my father, and my sister to what I think were preventable illnesses, but their doctors didn't know what to tell them to do to change their diet and lifestyle.
